Touch Move Rules

Players, except in blitz games, should play with "touch move" rules. It's good discipline, and teaches one to sit on one's hands before making a move. In tournament play, these rules are absolute.

  • A player touching one of his or her own pieces or pawns must move it if a legal move can be made with that piece or pawn.

  • A player touching one of his opponent's pawns or pieces must take it if it is a legal move.

  • The move is over when the piece or pawn is placed on a legal square for it, and the hand is removed.

  • A player who wants to adjust a pawn or piece in its square should say "I adjust" or "j'doube" before touching the piece.
