How to win a won game

There are several stages of a won game. Getting a small advantage out of or after the opening; then increasing a small advantage to a big plus; and finally winning a won position. I (Sophia Polgar) don’t know which is the hardest part of the three. If I had won all my games with big advantage… Building up a winning position usually takes a lot of time but spoiling it can be a matter of a single move. There are many things that can go wrong, among them the traps that the opponent sets for us. Another reason simply is running out of energy and losing concentration by the end of a long game and making mistakes from tiredness. A few tips for increasing an advantage and winning a won game:

  • If you are up in material, it is usually good for you to exchange pieces. The fewer pieces that are on the board, the bigger the importance of the material becomes.

  • Always (not only in a won game), look at what the opponent wants, what has changed with his last move.

  • Be aware of knights, they are probably the trickiest pieces. Getting forked by a knight in a position where you are two pawns up is disappointing, to say the least.

  • Before wanting to get more out of the position, make sure to keep your advantage. Do not hurry. The side with a bad position is more likely to make a mistake by wanting to break out from his uncomfortable position even if you don’t do much.

  • Put your pieces to their optimal position.

  • Look for a target; it can be a weak king or other weakness of the position.

  • Sometimes one weakness is not enough to strike at, create more weaknesses for the opponent.
